Reports to: Director and/or Crew Leader

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary $23.79 an hour

GENERAL SUMMARY:  Under direct supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader and Public Works Director, performs a variety of semi-skilled duties in the construction and maintenance of the Village streets, sidewalks, water and sewer system. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Understands the functions and procedures of the Water and Sewer Departments. 
  • Inspects, installs and repairs water mains, valves, fire hydrants, sewer mains and basins.
  • Ability to operate all the heavy equipment, trucks, power tools, hand tools and any and all support equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blue prints, water and sewer atlas, valve book and light control box book.
  • Installs and repairs street light poles, fixtures and wiring.
  • Maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks and curbs.
  • Ability to trim and remove trees.
  • Ability to courteously communicate and respond to residents. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  •    Valid CDL required
  •    Excellent customer service skills 
  •    Available to work a minimum of 40 hour week with mandatory alternating periods of on-call overtime.
  •    Minimum of 2-3 years in a Public Works Department or similar position, preferred
  •    Displayed an ability to perform all functions of the Laborer position 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT: 

  • Must be able to withstand working in inclement weather.  
  • Must be able to frequently sit, reach, stand, walk, climb or balance, bend or crouch or crawl
  • Frequently use hands to feel and operate tools, controls and other objects
  • Must be able to talk, hear, smell and see with our without assistance
  • Noise level in the work environment can be loud. 
  • May work near moving mechanical parts
  • Occasionally work in high or precarious places
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles and toxic chemicals 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

    • Successful completion of a six (6) month probationary period. 
    • Successfully pass all pre-employment medical screenings
    • Obtain Water Certification within allotted time 
    • Clean driving record
