Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Innovation, Commercialization, and Economic Development.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Associate Commissioner of Innovation, Commercialization, and Economic Development in managing the Utah Innovation Fund. They will play a key role in identifying venture capital partners to support future funding needs for startups, as well as industry partners to assist in assessing the market opportunity of the technology being considered. They will also help in developing out the vision, operations, and systems of the Innovation Lab and Fund with a targeted focus on commercialization efforts, including assisting in the development and investment of intellectual property, technology transfer operations for Utah Innovation Lab and Fund.

Responsibilities
  • Independently evaluates the commercial potential by identifying new uses, markets, market size, competing technologies using personal knowledge of emerging technologies, information gleaned from university partners, experts and on-line databases.
  • Collaborate with professors, students, and industry partners to identify research projects that have commercial potential.
  • Experience working within the higher education sector in understanding the conditions and systems.
  • Supporting efforts in fundraising strategies either for the Utah Innovation Fund, programming, or facilities.
  • Use existing extensive network in the venture capital, PE, and business space to expand the company's network by attending industry events, conferences, and meetings to meet potential investors and partners for the Utah Innovation Fund and The Point Innovation team.
  • Understand and stay up to date with university research and industry trends.
  • Independently develops a strategy for each of the selected technologies or opportunities.
  • Work with venture capital firms to connect opportunities to and from the Utah Innovation Lab Fund.
  • Facilitate relationships between the fund and its stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and other key partners. Ensure transparent communication and maintain strong, trust-based relationships.
  • Understand and stay up to date with industry changes related to compliance and law impacting Utah Innovation Fund
  • Support due diligence process on potential investment opportunities and present findings to the investment committee.
  • Proactively identifies potential problems with inventors, sponsors, and potential licensees.
  • Proposes, promotes and/or helps to negotiate solutions or agreements.
  • Participation on committees or industry associations as speaker, workshop leader, committee member, officer, etc. as requested by the Associate Commissioner.
  • All other job duties or projects as assigned by the Associate Commissioner of Innovation, Commercialization & Economic Development.
  • In state travel is necessary for this position. Infrequent out of state travel may be needed at times.
  • International travel may be needed at times

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree, equivalent work experience in a related field will be considered (1 years' experience is equivalent to one year of education)
  • 12 years' experience in a related field
Preference:

Preference may be given to applicants who meet the minimum requirements of the position, plus one or more of the
  • 12+ years of full-time direct work experience in investments, preferably in a venture capital or private equity fund.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with previous investment, commercialization, technology transfer, university administrative or research experience.
  • Graduate Education; PhD (one year of graduate education experience is equivalent to one year of work experience)
  • Applicants with higher education experience may be given preference.
Required Skills
  • Entrepreneurial, communication and interpersonal skills are critical for success in this position; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, build relationships with professors, students and venture capital firms required.
  • Deep understanding of venture capital markets and investment strategies.
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct due diligence on potential investment opportunities.
  • Strong organizational and systems thinking expertise and the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • A passion for innovation and the ability to identify new opportunities for growth.
  • Experience in fundraising and relationship management.
